A robot mower climbing a steep hillside lawn

Steep lawns are where most robot mowers give up. Every pick here is rated by its manufacturer for slopes of at least 45% (about 24°), and the top of the list is rated for 80% or more.

How we picked: Only models rated for 45% slopes or more; ranked by slope rating, then by tree-cover handling. More on our criteria.

FAQs

How steep is too steep for a robot mower?

Check the steepest part of your lawn, not the average, and pick a mower rated well above it. Slope ratings are given in percent (rise over run): 35% is about 19°, 45% about 24° and 80% about 39°. Ratings assume dry grass, so leave headroom for wet days.

Do I need all-wheel drive for a slope?

Not for moderate slopes: several two-wheel-drive models are rated to 45%. Above that, all-wheel drive is the norm. Every model on this site rated for more than 50% has all-wheel drive.
